Screening and sieving of raw materials

To ensure a smooth automation of powder handling in the production process AZO provides customers with systems for screening and sieving powder raw materials. The AZO cyclone screener have been used with great success for screening raw materials in the food, plastics, pharmaceutical and chemical industry for more than half a century.

Typical applications for screening and sieving raw materials

  • Control screening before and during processing to ensure a reliable production process

Raw material screening below the feeding points such as the bag tipping stations guarantee process reliability because significantly less contamination in the form of sack fibres, lumps, paper shreds or even knifes, screws and bolts etc. are able to enter the production process. By screening the powder raw material with an AZO screener, you can ensure a safe quality output on the one hand but you can also protect your process machinery such as high speed or vacuum mixers. This helps you to reduce the risk of down times of your production process

  • Control screening before filling and packaging to boost a constant quality output

Screening of the mixed product before the filling and packaging process ensures that only flawless products leave the production process. Lumps as well as product not of the correct particle size would be extracted by the cyclone screener. Finally this enhances your production process and helps achieving a constant quality output.

  • Breaking lumps when automating hygroscopic or bagged raw materials

Raw materials that tend to have lumps such as sugar or salt can cause a blockage of the conveying system. This leads to downtimes of the production process. AZO cyclone screeners are commonly used to gently break the lumps of these raw materials. In case lumps are very large or very hard, it is recommended to utilize a dedicated lump breaker above the cyclone screener.

  • Separation of agglomerates after a drying process with a cyclone screener

Once powder raw materials have been dried in a drying process, agglomerates are quite common to have. In order to separate agglomerates of raw materials from the good powder product for further processing, cyclone screeners are often used. The size of the agglomerates which the cyclone screener is separating from the good product is depending mostly on the used mesh size of the screen hose. While the fines drop through the screen hose, the coarse particles, in this case the agglomerates, are carried on and discharged continuously. Further a baffle at the end of the screen hose prevents fines from entering the coarse product.

  • Screening and recycling of fines to improve efficiency in the pharmaceutical industry

The granulation process is an important step when producing tablets. The aim of the granulation process is to improve homogeneity of the raw material mix and to eliminate the effect of segregation when conveying the raw material to the tablet press. However, some amounts of fines remain after the granulator. To recycle these fines, cyclone screeners can be used to separate the granules and the fines. The fines than can be brought back into the process while the granules can be conveyed to for example the tablet press.

  • Recovery of epoxy resin powder

AZO cyclone sceeners are often utilized to recover epoxy resin powder in powder coating units by separating foreign particles.

  • Control screening to ensure high quality in the production process of powder varnish after grinding

To ensure an efficient production process of powder varnish, a screener can be used to sieve the material after grinding. Only the fine material will drop through the screener while the coarse material will be conveyed back to the grinder to be grinded again. Implementing an AZO cyclone screener after the grinder will ensure a constant quality output and increase the efficiency of the production process.

  • Fractioning is the separation of powder bulk materials according to grain size

AZO cyclone screeners can be used to separate powdery bulk materials into various fractions according to grain size.
